Bert Frank update colour for Revolve

(UK) - British design brand Bert Frank present Revolve Oxblood, a bold, new cherry red colourway for the classic lighting collection.

Revolve by Bert Frank was an original when it was launched in 2013, a design classic, with an enduring fresh, slim silhouette and sleek, mid-century aesthetic.

One of Bert Frank’s most extensive lighting collections, Revolve provides endless options thanks to the varying colour finishes. New for AW20, Oxblood is the ideal addition to the Bert Frank colour palette. A rich cherry red, co-founder Robbie Lewellyn was inspired by the aged leather seats of vintage sport cars. The hue feels very timeless, very British and very Bert Frank.

Alongside the new colourway, a new style floor lamp has been added to the range, the Revolve Stem.

Revolve features a circular spun metal shade with an opal diffuser to cast a soft, warm, downward glow from the dimmable LED light source. Bert Frank’s signature use of brass is ever present and Revolve features a brass reflector which illuminates upwards alongside solid brass bases and stems. The Revolve family is now available in two brass finishes, original polished brass and new satin brass.

Gabriel Scott releases new lighting series

(Canada) - This autumn, Canadian lighting brand, Gabriel Scott, launches a new architectural series derived from the aesthetic of its successful Luna lighting series at Heals Festival of Light.

Iconic London design retailer Heals is nearing its 200th anniversary as a homewares retailer serving the upscale London community. This month, the brand launched the fifth instalment of its highly anticipated Festival of Light event that celebrates the best of international lighting and illumination design.

Luna A is the first release in the new Gabriel Scott product class, named the A-Series by the studio. This introduction of eight new lighting fixtures is based on the coveted design of the existing Luna light, a favourite choice for international architects and designers.  Inspired by a lunar halo, the elegant shapes of mouth-blown glass reference the moon’s diffused light and soft glow.

This allusive play of light is rendered through a coordinated stacking of glass forms blown by master artisans in various gradients of coloured glass. In keeping with the tradition of exquisite craftsmanship, for which the studio is known, Luna A paves the way for an innovative approach to accessible luxury.

Bold and striking in its design, the new range continues Gabriel Scott’s signature geometric, modular and strong architectural lines, which combine delicate coloured glass with metal hardware. Warm copper, espresso, grey and variations of rose glass play beautifully with customised metallic elements, and are accented with natural marble in some designs. Founder and Principal Designer Scott Richler distilled the most beautiful elements of his iconic Luna design into this cost effective new range.

The collection has been produced to satisfy the demand for a more affordable range of architectural lighting products, which can be specified more easily throughout residential projects, restaurants and hotels.

The new Luna A-Series will incorporate three different sconce designs (from £600), a marble-based table lamp (from £834), and two pendant designs (from £654). Options include black, brass or bronze hardware, and smoked or bronze glass.

Despite the lower price points, each piece will be hand-assembled in Gabriel Scott’s Montreal studio and the glass components hand-blown by its talented glass blower who lives and works in Quebec’s countryside in Canada.

“Hotels often specify our lighting fixtures but it might be a large-scale signature piece for a lobby or reception area. This new series can be featured in corridors or hotel rooms and of course, can be used in residential projects too. They make a statement in whatever space they might find themselves,” says Scott Richler.

The Heals Festival of Light has now ended, but the products are still available for purchase.

Women in Lighting connect the lighting community

(UK) - The international initiative Women in Lighting, set up by Light Collective in collaboration with formalighting and Archifos, has had a full few months with the launch of its T-shirt competition and Social Roulette events.

Sharon Stammers, of Light Collection, says of the WiL T-shirt competition: "In recent months we have all been bombarded by some serious and scary Covid messaging but at the same time have been treated to an unprecedented wave of positivity in message-form with signs in windows and on billboards about kindness, community and helping each other.

"Then came the start of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and more messages appeared all over the globe. Without a doubt, it's a time for sharing messages and for creating global solidarity.

"Women in Lighting wants to join this global phenomenon by sharing our positive messages and to achieve this we launched a T-shirt design competition. The T-shirt was originally designed to be a basic undergarment. But over the years, the world's most ubiquitous fashion item has become a powerful weapon. T-shirst are a great barometer of social change. They can shock, outrage, unite and challenge the status quo. They can also disseminate messages around the world."

WiL invited the lighting community to submit their T-shirt designs online with five designs selected as the winners by judges Giacomo Rossi, Liz West and Yishan Zhuang, with a sixth design voted for by the public.

The winning designs came from Rolands Popenkovs, Giorgia Rossi, Alexandra Bourganou, Michela Damon and Hannah Poore. The winning t-shirt designs are available to buy on the Women in Lighting website, with the proceeds going to charity Light Reach.

On 22 October, the WiL team hosted a virtual event that involved 100 participants, from the Europe and the Middle East regions, being randomly matched with each other for a three minute conversation, before switching to another randomly selected match-up.

This month, after the success of its first social roulette event, WiL launches a second virtual meet up for the Asia - Pacific region. Registration is open to take part here: linktr.ee/womeninlighting

Surface Design Show 2021 cancelled

(UK) – The show, expected to take place February 2021, has been postponed to 2022.

Surface Design Show organisers have announced that the 2021 edition of the show has been cancelled.

Originally due to take place on 9-11 February 2021, the next edition of the event will now be held on 8-10 February 2022.

Christopher Newton, Event Director, said: “Over the last months, we have worked hard with our industry colleagues to create an event that we felt could be held both successfully and safely. Our venue, the Business Design Centre, even held a prototype event to reassure the Government that we could work within their guidelines for holding trade shows.

“Unfortunately, the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the UK has forced the Government to delay the re-opening of trade shows.

“Of course, we are hugely disappointed that next year’s show will not take place and we have been overwhelmed by the support of our exhibitors, however we look forward to bringing everyone back together for 2022, which promises to be better than ever.”

Newton added that the announcement will not affect the annual Surface Design Awards – more than 100 projects have been entered into the 2021 awards, with the first step of judging taking place at the end of October, and finalists being announced in early November. The Awards presentation will take place in February 2021.

(UK) – Entry period for [d]arc awards extended until 17th January 2021.

Due to this postponement, the awards entry deadline has been extended to 17th January 2021. The entries will then be shortlisted by the independent judging panel of designers and the voting period will commence in February. This new deadline will enable projects and products launched throughout 2020 to be entered into the awards, making the [d]arc awards a true review of the entire year.

Paul James, Managing Director of [d]arc media, commented: “Although it is disappointing to have to postpone the [d]arc awards it is the right thing to do given the uncertainty that currently exists over live events in the UK. However, the delay to Spring 2021 now means we can have an entry period throughout the whole of 2020, enabling the [d]arc awards to be a full review of the best projects and products launched in 2020.”

The awards is a unique concept utilising arc and darc magazines’ reputation as being the most widely read and respected lighting design publications in the world. In collaboration with creative consultants Light Collective, the peer-to-peer awards process provides a unique opportunity for every practice to get involved.

Once the entry period ends on the 17th January, the submissions in each category will be shortlisted by the judging panel of independent designers. Then it’s over to the design community to take part in the peer-to-peer voting process (only independent designer’s are eligible to vote!).

All winners will be announced at the exclusive [d]arc night party, which will also be streamed online to a worldwide audience.

Catellani & Smith - Giulietta BE

A movie by Giorgio Oppici shot in 2020.

Thanks to battery operation and the absence of cables, the new Giulietta BE can be ‘transported’ easily anywhere. With a simple touch of the hand, Giulietta BE can be switched on and set to three different light intensities. Giulietta BE consists of a thin rod – which originates from a circular base – and a circular disc surrounding the rod, apparently without any support. The disc concealing the light source is the distinctive feature of the lamp, which is part of the “Giulietta” collection.

Foscarini launches new range in Milan

(Italy) - During Milano Design City, Foscarini presents a range of new offerings – table, floor and suspension lamps designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, Marc Sadler, Ludovica & Roberto Palomba, Tord Boontje – in a special installation created by Ferruccio Laviani for the spaces of the showroom on Corso Monforte.

Among the new developments, Twiggy by Marc Sadler has been updated with great elegance, brandishing a diffuser in an unusual material: wood. Lumiere by Rodolfo Dordoni, reaching its 30th anniversary in 2020, celebrates by taking on unexpected finishes, produced with two traditional glassblowing techniques that give rise to two new versions in a special signed and numbered edition.

Ludovica & Roberto Palomba present Bump for the occasion, a new irregular, organic suspension lamp, and a special dual interpretation of Birdie, a popular model that is now offered in a version specially conceived for the hospitality sector. Finally, the Sun - Light of Love suspension lamp by Tord Boontje stands out for its forceful decorative and theatrical impact, and its two identities expressed through different gold or white colouring.

“Every time I think about new displays for Foscarini Spazio Monforte, I do it as if I had to create an installation inside a gallery”, says Ferruccio Laviani, “where the pure spaces permit any type of setting, allowing you to radically change the tone through the language of the various displays and the collections of lamps utilised. For this occasion, I have imagined a free, empty space where elements in natural wood fill the setting, creating pathways between abstract, almost childish forms that multiply in space, becoming simultaneously dividers and backdrops between one lamp and the next”.

The natural concrete of the showroom, the sculptural forms of the parts in natural poplar and the technology of the products on view all intersect to become a harmonious whole, a single language that narrates the story of Foscarini, as in a book of fables: every page tells of different, intimate worlds and universes.

Milano Design City will also provide a chance to listen to the designers talk about their new projects for Foscarini, in a series of live appointments moderated by Laura Traldi, on the Instagram channel @foscarinilamps:

Tuesday 29 September, h. 13.00 | Roberto Palomba introduces the new BUMP suspension lamp

Friday 2 October, h. 12.30 | Marc Sadler presents the new TWIGGY WOOD

Monday 5 October, h. 13.00 | Ludovica Serafini talks about BIRDIE EASY and ZERO
